Introducing Our School
Hororata Primary School is a small contributing school catering for students in Years 1 to 6 in rural Canterbury. It is sited in attractive, well-developed grounds. The growing roll reflects the growth of the population in this area and the quality of the education the school provides.
Since first opening in 1870, our school has maintained a strong emphasis on family, community, academic and sporting excellence. The Board, staff and school community are committed to providing quality education to enable the young people of Hororata to be competent, confident and connected lifelong learners.
The school community is made up mainly of rural sector workers, from within the dairy, arable, sheep and rural support sectors. The immediate school population is relatively stable, with the exception of the dairy industry which contributes to minor fluctuations in the school role.
High quality community relationships are a feature of our school. The support provided by an enthusiastic Parent Teacher Association (PTA) reflects the high level of community involvement and the importance the Board, principal and staff place on community consultation. Both the PTA and the Board provide extensive resources and equipment to ensure that all students have the opportunity to achieve their true potential.
Students receive a good quality education from dedicated and knowledgeable teachers. They learn in stimulating and supportive class environments and are able to confidently share their ideas and listen to and respect the opinions of others.
Teachers use a range of effective teaching approaches that help students to know what they need to learn, how well they are learning and what they need to learn next. They set clear expectations for achievement and behaviour and support these expectations with good management practices and thorough planning to meet student needs.
Classrooms are well-organised and stimulating learning environments. Students learn and teachers work in a positive school culture. Supportive relationships exist between and among students and teachers.
Hororata Primary School is a remarkable school with a strong emphasis on family, community, academic and sporting excellence. We are committed to providing quality education to enable the children of Hororata to become “Life Long Learners”.
